This conference showcases applied research related to language-friendly pedagogy and digital technologies in elementary and secondary classrooms and schools. The ESCAPE Projects research team has collaborated with teachers, students, policy makers, teacher educators and international researchers to create opportunities for multilingual newcomer students and their families to integrate and thrive in schools and together they have explored the impact of language friendly pedagogy.

Questions

  1. My students don’t understand the school language enough to learn Maths. What should I do?/Mes élèves ne comprennent pas suffisamment la langue de l’école pour apprendre les mathématiques. Que dois-je faire ? 
  2. Attempts to involve the parents have been challenging. Are they interested at all? /Les tentatives d’implication des parents ont été difficiles. Sont-ils vraiment intéressés ? 
  3. I do not know that my students have received some education in STEM but they do not seem to understand what we are doing in class. How come? /Je sais que mes élèves ont reçu une certaine éducation en matière de STIM, mais ils ne semblent pas comprendre ce que nous faisons en classe. Comment cela se fait-il ? 
  4. I am an immersion teacher teaching science in French to English speakers. I have a double obstacle as my students need to learn French and their parents do not understand it. How is a language friendly approach working in my class? /Je suis professeur d’immersion, j’enseigne les sciences en français à des anglophones. J’ai un double obstacle : mes élèves doivent apprendre le français et leurs parents ne le comprennent pas. Comment une approche amie des langues fonctionne-t-elle dans mon cas ? 
  5. French is a minority language in Ontario and our students are highly multilingual. How can we promote the French language while supporting and building on their own?/Le français est une langue minoritaire en Ontario et nos élèves sont très plurilingues. Comment pouvons-nous promouvoir la langue française tout en soutenant et en développant leur propre langue ?  
  6. I am a STEM teacher and not a language teacher. How should I involve the language to support my students?/Je suis professeur de STIM. Pas un professeur de langues. Comment dois-je faire intervenir la langue pour soutenir mes élèves ? 
  7. I am an ESL teacher not a STEM teacher. How do you want me to support students in STEM? /Je suis professeur de français langue seconde. Pas un professeur de STEM. Comment voulez-vous que je soutienne les étudiants en STEM ?
